Master Lenore Cairncross, of Soul Power Cape Town, in collaboration with the Institute of Healing Memories partnered with the God Has Many Names project to educate young people about different faiths and religions through sacred music to build love, respect, appreciation, and harmony among communities.
The project was started by the Institute for Healing Memories who has been working with youth, between the ages of 12 to 18, to educate them about different faiths and traditions in order to heal separation and to encourage respect, appreciation, and oneness. Young people from different backgrounds and beliefs were gathered from communities across the city.
The children have visited different places and a variety of workshops to learn about various faiths and religious practices. Chanting mantras in different languages and sacred music from various traditions have opened the children to greater oneness.
Through chanting these sacred mantras, the youth created their own performances including drumming, poetry, and dance. This culminated in a public performance at the One Love: Festival of Healing on September 23-24, chanting the following mantras:
- Love, Peace and Harmony—in three main languages of Cape Town (English, Afrikaans, and isiXhosa)
- San San Jiu Liu Ba Yao Wu—sacred healing mantra 3396815
- Om Mani Padme Hum—Guan Yin’s Enlightenment Mantra in Sanskrit
- Bismillah Ihrahman Ihrahim—Muslim prayer, translated as “In the name of God, most Gracious, most Compassionate”
- Om Sarvesham Svastir Bhavatu—Hindu peace mantra
- Hallelujah—in Hebrew, translated as “To joyously praise God” and in the Christian tradition “Praise the Lord”
- Hare Krishna—Maha Mantra, the “Great Mantra” chanted by Hare Krishnas
The children said they really enjoyed chanting all the mantras from various faiths and traditions, but their favorite is Love, Peace and Harmony. Enjoy this video of the children performing at the One Love: Festival of Healing.
The feedback from the children participating was heart-touching. Many said they felt more peace and harmony within themselves, and have learned to have more respect for one another. One participant shared that with chanting Love, Peace and Harmony he could experience more space and felt that if he saw a brother or sister being shot, he would have time to think before reacting and would not immediately react with revenge.
Master Lenore feels the God Has Many Names project has the potential to create bridges among communities across faiths, cultures, geography, and more. Children are the leaders of tomorrow and if there can be more tolerance, understanding, and respect, we could enjoy a much more peaceful and loving society.
