World Peace Day: Hawaii Love Peace Harmony Award Ceremony

Master Orlena
Master Sha Tao Center—Honolulu, Hawaii

Imagine a world where everyone holds the
message of love, peace and Harmony!

On Thursday, September 21, Master Sha Tao Center Hawaii held the Love Peace Harmony Award Ceremony at Hawaii State Capitol Auditorium. This inaugural event recognized those who embody the spirit of love, peace and harmony in their daily actions and service to their community and the world, and also commemorated the United Nations International Day of Peace.

The honorees are very distinguished members of the Hawaiian community:

  • Hawai’i Children and Youth Day Co-founders:
Senator Suzanne Chun-Oakland and Representative Dennis Arakaki
  • Living Treasure of Hawaiʻi and International Peace Builder:
    Muthukumaru SooriyaKumar (Sooriya)
  • Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage:
    The Hōkūle’a

With over 200 people in attendance, the room was filled to capacity and people lined the walls of the auditorium. Hawaii’s current Ms. Hawaii, Mokihana Maldonado, was one of the Masters of Ceremonies. The evening included a wonderful line-up of entertainment with vocal and dance expressions, and speeches by different parties.

Sooriya’s supporters held a special ceremony to congratulate him. It was heart-touching to watch as approximately one hundred people honored him with a lei.

At the end of the awards ceremony, many students gathered on the stage to sing Love, Peace and Harmony and filled the entire auditorium with their love and light.

Honolulu Councilwoman Kymberly Pine also gave a touching congratulatory speech to the recipients. She shared that there was so much clearing that happened, not only in the auditorium but within the entire State Capital, which in her words “held so much darkness” because of all the political battles that usually occur there.

Our greatest gratitude goes to Joanne Tachibana who was instrumental in putting together this entire program as a demonstration of her love and commitment to honor Master Sha and his mission in Hawaii. It was her labour of love that allowed her to envision the Love Peace Harmony Award Ceremony as a way to give Love Peace Harmony Hawaii and Master Sha the appropriate recognition.

And, special thanks to our community partners:

  • United Nations Association Hawai’i Chapter
  • Campaign Nonviolence
  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hawai’i Coalition
  • Gandhi International Institute for Peace
  • Hawai’i Forgiveness Project
  • The Office of Council Member Kymberly Pine
